about

GeoGraphy, an environment for algorithmic composition I worked with for almost a decade, is at the base of all the series of Acta GeoGraphica (2001-2007). Each series is generated starting from a unique imaginary landscape, a sort of map of “pulviscular” sound objects. The numbers of each series define different trajectories that literally explore the same space. At the end, the latter emerges as a virtual, “compossible” soundscape, integrating the different perspectives.
Composing here is like film-shooting: it is like using a travelling.

Il Gran Paese (2001), Sopra l'archibugiar in valle, I-VII (2002), Escursioni sulla frangia, I-VI (2003), Bordi del fumo, I-III (2003), Paesaggi su pergamena, I-V (2005), Foresta rossa (2007).

PRESS
Sounds recur from track to track, but occupy different positions in the mix, as if heard coming from a different direction or at a greater or lesser distance. The effect is perhaps comparable to navigating the three-dimensional virtual world of a video game: through a process of exploration, which in this case requires close and repeated listening, one learns to orient oneself.
- Nathan Thomas for Fluid Radio

Each imaginary landscape, and the album as a whole, is driven by rhythm and texture more than melody or overarching structure. The compositional method leaves the results somewhat detached from human emotion, yet there remain moments that are very evocative nonetheless. Though its been 5 years since these experiments came to a close, and you should continue to check out the work Valle’s done since, these 37 imaginative tracks are a worth the exploration.
- Joseph Sannicandro for A Closer Listen

Acta GeoGraphica is dramatic computer music. With this composition Andrea shows exactly how computer music can be both intellectually rigorous and emotionally engaging. These are wonderful sounds. Get lost in the many pieces. Put it on shuffle or treat it as a series of suites (as the artist intended) either way you cannot lose.
