Der Traume der Zalavie (1923) is the last film made by the Turin-born Emilio Ghione for the mask that most characterized him, Za la Mort, the skull-faced gentleman apache that Ghione developed serially with great success over a period of fifteen years. The film is a German production with an international cast (including the American diva Fern Andra) and constitutes a summation of the themes and motifs of the Za la Mort saga, here at the center of a criminal conspiracy. It is one of the last great productions of the Italian silent film (now exiled in Germany), full of twists and turns, highly spectacular in the costumes and settings (often outdoors), sumptuously colored in the toning.
Arto fantasma is back, with an enlarged ensemble to provide still more nuances for Ghione's magna opus.

The project has been funded by the Public Engagement (PE) fund of Humanities Departement (StudiUm) - Università di Torino, in collaboration with SMET-Conservatorio di Torino and Museo Nazionale del Cinema, Torino. It has bee premiered at Cinema Massimo, Museo del Cinema di Torino, on October 3rd, 2022 for the To Listen To festival.
